A workshop floor is built from long parallel planks, so the seams between planks form straight parallel lines spaced exactly one matchstick-length apart. You drop a matchstick so that where it lands and how it is oriented are both completely random. What is the probability that the matchstick comes to rest lying across one of the seams?
